Pulmonary Services
Pulmonary Services at East Jefferson provides high quality, comprehensive pulmonary care from diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation. At East Jefferson General Hospital your care options for pulmonary disorders and diseases are as varied as the conditions that they treat, and you, the individual receiving treatment.
We encourage you to contact our department if you have any questions regarding pulmonary care or the services that we offer. Contact information for each area is given following the descriptions.
“We want members of the community to know we’re here to answer their questions whether they are a patient here or not. We encourage those with respiratory concerns to talk to one of our very qualified and accessible pulmonary professionals,”
– Ken Duet, Director of Respiratory Services
Respiratory Care
Credentialed respiratory therapists administer the most innovative therapies at the bedside to treat patients with acute and chronic pulmonary conditions. Our therapists also care for critically ill patients who may require airway management and the application of life support systems in the Emergency Department, Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Pulmonary Function & Bronchoscopy
Pulmonary Function describes a broad range of breathing tests used to diagnose lung diseases or disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These tests measure how well the lungs take in and exhale air, and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood.
Bronchoscopy is a procedure during which a pulmonary physician inserts a lighted endoscope into the trachea and advances it into segments of the airways. It may be used for either therapeutic or diagnostic purposes, such as to treat bronchial inflammation by clearing the airways, or to biopsy tissue in the lungs in order to make an accurate cancer diagnosis.
For questions on these procedures please contact Susan Bailey at (504) 780-5701, or Lori Morris at (504) 454-5216.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The goal of Pulmonary Rehabilitation is to restore the fullest functional capacity possible for patients with chronic lung disease. This involves diagnostic testing, patient education, respiratory therapy and physical conditioning to minimize the effects of the disease. For more information on Pulmonary Rehabilitation, click here, or call Sherry Amadon at (504) 849-8790 with questions.
Asthma Management Services
Asthma Management Services provide an individualized step-by-step approach to managing asthma in adults and children. The goals of the plan are to prevent chronic symptoms, maintain (near) “normal” physiology, maintain normal activity levels, reduce long term-medical costs, provide optimal pharmacology, and meet patients’ and families’ expectations and satisfactions. For more information on Asthma Management Services, click here, or contact Susan Bailey at (504) 780-5701 for answers about asthma and asthma treatments.
Sleep Disorders Program
The Sleep Disorders Program can help diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and chronic snoring. These conditions are identified through sleep studies conducted in our Sleep Center. After diagnosis a treatment plan is then designed to restore restful sleep. For more information on the Sleep Disorders Program including the Sleep Center, click here, or call Sadie Ramsey at (504) 849-8700 with questions about the program.
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Pulmonary Services provides support to Neurology with this diagnostic tool. An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures the electrical activity of the brain to test for seizure disorders, to look for causes of confusion, and to evaluate head injuries, tumors, infections, degenerative diseases, and metabolic disturbances that affect the brain. It can also be used to diagnose sleep disorders. For questions regarding EEG please contact Gwen Smith at (504) 454-5545.
