Geriatric
services at East Jefferson General Hospital are designed not only
to care for patients, but to provide assistance for caregivers as
well. The Adult Day Center offers a safe and enjoyable place that
helps clients maximize their independence while giving caregivers
worry-free time to work, run errands or just relax.
Behavioral disturbances, when a person threatens to harm himself
or others, can arise in conjunction with a psychiatric disorder,
such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia or depression. The Geriatric
Behavioral Health Unit specializes in treating patients aged 65
or older when these disturbances occur.
Adult Day Center
As the population continues to age, adults are finding themselves
not only caring for their children, but also for their parents
or significant others. Caregivers carry an especially heavy burden
in their efforts to provide consistent support and supervision.
The Adult Day Center can help shoulder some of that weight by
offering a safe and enjoyable environment for adult clients in
need. The center is a medically based facility that offers services
that include nursing, social services, and monitoring of medication,
vital signs and weight. Under the direction of a Certified Patient
Activity Director, activities are designed not only for fun and
socialization, but also to help patients maximize their level
of independence for as long as possible.
Eligibility
Any adult that is over 18 years of age who needs assistance with
activities of daily living, medication monitoring, nutritional
support, and social stimulation may be eligible. Typically our
clients have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, stroke, dementia, depression,
Parkinson's disease, or other illnesses. All clients must have
a physician's order to participate.

A
typical day includes morning coffee and news, social time, exercise,
small and large group activities, a health class and some relaxation
time. Fridays are "beauty shop" days, when clients can
have their hair and nails done.
Meals
Continental breakfast, a nutritional, heart healthy lunch, and
an afternoon snack are provided.
Program Hours
Hours are from 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Clients

Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit
This secure, 11-bed psychiatric unit is designed to treat patients
65 or older with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses. The unit
treats patients who, because of a psychiatric disorder, might
harm themselves or others, or are gravely disabled.
A seniors-only psychiatric unit is important because seniors
are often uncomfortable, or even fearful, when mixed with younger
patients on general adult psychiatric units. The Geriatric Behavioral
Health Unit is designed to cater to the unique needs of seniors,
providing the safe and comfortable environment essential to successful
treatment.
