Emergency Medical Services

Established in 1979, East Jefferson General Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team provides 24-hour-a-day, 911 service for the entire east bank of Jefferson Parish, including Metairie, Kenner, and Harahan.

EJGH’s emergency medical technicians and paramedics answer nearly 40,000 calls per year with an average response time of five to six minutes. EMS units are strategically placed throughout the service area to reduce response time.

As a community hospital, you’ll see our EMS at a variety of community events such as the Crescent City Classic, Mardi Gras Marathon, and all the Mardi Gras parades on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish. We also provide onsite EMS services for non-profit organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Autism Society, Leukemia Society, and the Jefferson Beautification Society.

Special Response Team (SRT)
EMS has a SRT trained to respond to hazardous materials incidents, as well as any weapons of mass destruction event. This service is provided through local area fire departments when necessary. We also have an Honor Guard for formal occasions such as funerals or awards banquets.  Contact EMS for Honor Guard service.

IN AN EMERGENCY, PLEASE CALL 911.

Stay calm: The first, and best thing you can do is to stay calm.

Call 911: If someone else is with you, have them call 911.  Try to have the following information available if you can.

  • The address or location of the injured person
  • A call back number
  • A brief description of the injuries or illness
  • How many people are injured
  • DO NOT HANG up until the dispatcher ends the conversation

If the person is not breathing, the 911 Operator may be able to walk you through CPR instructions over the phone.

If the person is injured in a car accident and there is no immediate danger, such as fire, do not move them. Unnecessary movement can cause additional injuries.

HANDS ONLY-CPR

The American Heart Association recently announced mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is no longer necessary on those having a heart attack. Instead, anyone can, and should perform “Hands-Only CPR” if you see someone collapse.

  1. Call 911
  2. Use straight arms to push hard and fast at the center of the chest.

Hands-Only CPR has been shown to more than double the chances of survival for an adult who has collapsed from cardiac arrest.

WHEN AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE APPROACHES YOU:

  • When clear, slow down and move to the right lane, out of the way of the approaching vehicle.
  • If you are at a camera-recorded intersection, PLEASE CLEAR THE PATH FOR THE EMERGENCY VEHICLE, you will not be ticketed for moving out of the way for an emergency vehicle.
