DaVinci Robotic Surgical System

With the addition of the S-Generation DaVinci Robotic Surgical System, East Jefferson General Hospital stands at the fore in the areas of robotic and minimally invasive surgery. From a remote station, 3 to 6 feet from the patient, the surgeon views the surgery through a viewer that gives him an enlarged, lighted, 3-D view of the surgery area. From that station, the surgeon manipulates robotic “hands” that perfectly mirror the natural motions of traditional surgery. Because only the robot’s “hands” ever touch the patient after the preliminary incision, there is much less bleeding and risk of infection. This benefits the patient directly by leading to shorter hospital stays and significantly faster recovery times.

The DaVinci Surgical System was developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc. of Sunnyvale California. It enhances surgical capabilities providing superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, greater precision and ergonomic comfort for the surgeon. As a result of these capabilities, surgeons can now perform even complex surgery using 1-2 cm incisions. This enables EJGH to offer a superior minimally invasive option to the broadest possible range of patients.

The DaVinci S-Generation HD Surgical System integrates 3D HD endoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the surgical field. Only the DaVinci System enables new, minimally invasive options for complex surgical procedures.

The Finest in Prostate Care:
Today, DaVinci represents the gold standard in prostatectomy. Traditional prostate surgery calls for an incision running from the navel to the groin. The surgery is usually followed by several days of hospitalization and a recovery period that can take weeks. Robotic Prostatectomy allows for three incisions that are each less than an inch long. Patients are usually hospitalized a couple of days and recovery times are reduced by several days.

Perfecting the Art of Teamwork:
Once it was determined that EJGH would acquire an S-Generation DaVinci, the search began to form an elite team that would be specially trained for the nuances of DaVinci surgery. In only a few weeks, the team was intact and sent for training in Texas where an S-Generation was already in use. This team, selected for their unique qualifications and skill sets, work as a unit with the various surgeons who also must be specifically trained and credentialed to operate DaVinci. With this team in place, EJGH delivers the finest combination of human skills and compassion with technological advancement.

The New Hysterectomy:
While traditional hysterectomy requires a surgical incision stretching several inches across the patient’s bikini line and a recovery that can take months, DaVinci allows the procedure to be performed with tiny incisions no wider than your fingernail and reduces recovery by days or sometimes weeks.

At this time, EJGH is using the DaVinci almost exclusively in the fight against prostate cancer. Soon, hysterectomy will be added to the list of procedures successfully performed and in time, many other procedures may be added including thoracic surgery, lobectomy and even a minimally invasive gastric bypass.
