1. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible to be considered for admission to this program:
    1. Graduates of Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) - accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada.
    2. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
      1. Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or
      2. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction.
    4. United States citizen graduates from medical schools outside the United States and Canada who cannot qualify under 1.C, but who have successfully completed the licensure examination in a United States jurisdiction in which law or regulations provide that a full and unrestricted license to practice will be granted without further examination after successful completion of a specified period of graduate medical education.
    5. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and its territories not accredited by the LMCE, but recognized by the educational and licensure authorities in a medical licensing jurisdiction who have completed the procedures described in paragraph I.D.
    6. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school

  2. In addition to the requirements of Section 1 above, to be considered for an interview, the following supporting documentation must be in the applicant's file in the residency:
    1. An original Dean's letter with the seal of the medical school. If the letter is not written in English, it must be accompanied by a certified translation.
    2. Documentation of a passing score on Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE); No minimum passing scores are required at this time. However, there may be no more than two failures on all steps combined. This is usually contained in the Dean's letter. Otherwise, a certified copy of the scores is required.
    3. If English is not the native language of the applicant, a certified copy of a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. Spoken English will be assessed and documented during a telephone contact.
    4. Participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) documented by a NRMP identification number is required for all applicants at the PGY-I level.
    5. Social Security Number.
    6. United States citizenship or permanent resident status.
    7. Two letters of recommendation from United States physicians, at least one of which must be from a physician certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
    8. Evidence supporting a reasonable expectation of receiving Louisiana medical licensure after the successful completion of the first of residency training.
    9. International medical graduates should have documentation of recent organized medical experience, such as an externship, in the United States of at least one year duration. This should be documented by a physician licensed in the United States.

  3. Interviews with the Program Director, residency faculty and residents will be scheduled between November 1 and mid-February each year for those PGY-I applicants who meet the criteria in paragraphs 1 and 2 above.

  4. In mid-February, a rank-order list of all qualified PGY-I applicants who have interviewed in the program will be prepared and submitted to the NRMP. Input will be obtained from faculty and residents. Applicants will be considered on the basis of their academic credentials, preparedness for residency training, ability to benefit from the program, personal characteristics and ability to communicate. The residency program director has the final responsibility for the selection of resident applicants to be placed on the rank-order list.

  5. Applicants seeking placement in the program levels other than the initial PGY-I year must meet all qualifications in paragraphs 1 and 2. Interviews will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. The decision to offer placement in the program is made by the program director with input from faculty and residents and is based on the criteria in paragraph 4. The NRMP status does not apply to such applicants.
    Applicants currently in a residency training program who wish to transfer to this program at the PGY-II level must a have a letter of consent from their current program director. If accepted, they must also obtain documentation from their previous training program showing rotations successfully completed and dates of such service. Credit for rotations taken in another program must be approved by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) prior to transfer to this program. Applicants seeking a PGY-III level position must have a letter of approval from the ABFM before the applicant will be considered.
