Opening on Valentine’s Day, 1971, East Jefferson General Hospital started as a 250-bed facility with almost 250 physicians serving the newly burgeoning suburbs of Jefferson Parish. From the beginning, the hospital was to be a not-for-profit community hospital with a board of directors comprised of representatives from the community’s financial, educational, civic, and business community.
Today, EJGH stands as a state-of-the-art hospital with more than 450 beds. Our patients are served by a staff of more than 3,000 team members and more than 700 physicians. In 2002, EJGH became the first hospital in Louisiana to earn a prestigious Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In 2006, EJGH was one of only a handful of hospitals able to raise their standards high enough to earn the distinction of being renewed as a Nurse Magnet Hospital. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is regularly recognized for excellence in patient care and customer service and has been honored as a five star hospital by Healthgrades in the areas of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Services.
Primary services offered by EJGH include a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services. Many of our departments have earned particular recognition including Cardiology, Pulmonary Services, Oncology, Orthopedics, Surgery, Food and Nutrition, Same Day Surgery and Woman and Child Services, which is now the highest volume birthing center in the region. Our status as a regional leader in technology is secure with 3-T MRI, DaVinci S-Generation Robotic Surgical System, Trilogy Cancer System, 64-Slice CT, PET Fusion and more.
No mention of our history would be complete without mentioning our experience during and after Hurricane Katrina. As the storm bore down on EJGH, more than 1,500 physicians, team members and their families braced themselves to care for the 300 patients who remained under our care. While the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital took on water, EJGH stood strong, becoming one of only three hospitals in the area to never close their doors. Not one patient was lost to Hurricane Katrina and since then, the hospital has emerged as an even greater partner to the community we serve.
East Jefferson General Hospital continues to evolve with the changing needs of those it serves. We continue making facility improvements, adding medical technologies and refining processes to ensure the highest level of care and professionalism. We believe all these improvements will only reach their full potential to aid our community if they are utilized by a medical staff that is second to none. If you are reading this, you have been identified as having the skills, disposition and commitment we seek.
