Massage is a wonderful way to relax, relieve stress and reduce muscle tension. At the EJGH Wellness Center, massage is also a way to improve overall health and ease the symptoms associated with some chronic health problems

Several different types of massage are available at the Wellness Center, each with unique benefits. According to massage therapist Julie Mathes, different techniques can be combined to create a custom massage according to the client's needs. For example, a client who has diabetes can benefit from circulatory massage of the legs in addition to the stress relief of Swedish massage.

Swedish Massage
This type of massage targets the soft tissues near the surface of the skin. It is the most common type of massage practiced in the US.

Deep Tissue Massage
This technique uses direct pressure and friction on the muscles to target deep muscle tissue. This is an excellent way to ease muscle tension and stiffness.

Circulatory (Lymph) Massage
This method aims to improve circulation and the flow of lymph fluid. It can help increase lower extremity circulation in those who have diabetes or other conditions that affect circulation. It is also useful for those with edema or interruption of the lymphatic system.

Sports Massage
Athletes can benefit from this massage method, which focuses on specific muscle groups. The targeted muscles depend on what sports the client engages in. Techniques from both Swedish and deep tissue massage are often used in sports massage.

Hot Stone Massage
Stone therapy offers a way to alternate body temperature during a massage using lava stones, which have excellent warm and cold retention qualities. The hot stones are used in pressure point therapy as well as inducing a deep state of relaxation.

Reflexology
The therapist works the hands and feet to stimulate circulation throughout the body. Other benefits include stress reduction and enhanced healing. It is a good option for those who want to experience massage, but don't want to disrobe.

Prenatal Massage
Designed to benefit both baby and mother-to-be, prenatal massage can reduce stress, promote relaxation, improve circulation, ease muscle aches and provide emotional support through touch.
