If your looking for a way to relax, reduce stress and improve your overall well being, you might want to consider the ancient art of reflexology. It has been in use for thousands of years in a variety of cultures, and the modern adaptation is available at the Wellness Center.

Reflexology uses zones and pressure points on the feet and hands to improve circulation and energy throughout the body. Each of these zones reflects a specific area of the body, including limbs, organs, glands and muscles. The massage therapist "works" the hands or feet by using her hands to put pressure on certain zones or points. The goal is to attain balance in the body and to help the body heal itself.

While reflexology is generally safe and effective in enhancing relaxation and improving wellness, it should not be used in place of traditional medical care or as a means of diagnosis. Reflexology is complementary, which means it is a technique that can be used with traditional treatment to enhance healing and reduce the stress and tension that contribute to disease.

Each reflexology visit begins with a review of the client's general health. If the massage therapist sees any reason not to proceed, she will refer the client to a physician for any necessary medical treatment or clearance. During the session, the client lies on his or her back while the massage therapist works the feet, then the hands. The client can remain clothed, making reflexology a good alternative to massage for those would rather not disrobe.

For most people, reflexology offers a safe and pleasant experience. A very few exceptions are those with a wound or other injury to the foot, ankle, hand or wrist, which should be allowed to fully heal before undergoing reflexology. Those with arthritis should check with their doctor first.
