Our
Community's Future
A community's quality of life is demonstrated in many ways. We
all want to feel safe and secure in our homes and businesses,
enjoy clean public parks and facilities, and participate in a
thriving society. As your community hospital, East Jefferson General
Hospital reflects the excellent quality of life in this place
we call home.
In the 1960s community leaders saw the need for a community hospital
to meet the medical needs of the growing population on the East
Bank of Jefferson Parish. The area bounded by West Esplanade Avenue
and Houma Boulevard, then an undeveloped swamp, was chosen as
the future site of East Jefferson General Hospital. Construction
began in 1967. Since opening our doors in 1971 with 250 beds and
a medical staff of 250 physicians, EJGH has cared for generations
of families.
We have continued to grow with our community, expanding to over
450 beds and 800 physicians on staff. The hospital now employs
over 3,000 people, many of them your neighbors, family and friends.
These 3,000 people help drive an economic engine with an annual
payroll of over $95,000,000. East Jefferson General is proud to
play such an important role in the business community.
Keeping our community healthy requires more than treating the
sick and injured. As a community hospital, we know the importance
of timely healthcare information and education in preventing illness
and injury. Through classes, screenings and seminars, we are leading
the way in quality healthcare and community education. We're here
to help you manage a chronic condition, assist a family member
in their care, or teach a big brother how to hold his new baby
sister.
Through the efforts of our employees, or team members as we call
each other, we are able to offer comprehensive services for every
stage of life. Our team has made EJGH the strong healthcare leader
that it is today. These people work together every day to provide
you and your family with high quality medical care, delivered
with the latest technology and a high degree of expertise.
It is our team that made us Louisiana's first Nurse Magnet hospital,
a designation awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center
(ANCC). The overall goal of the ANCC is to identify excellence
in nursing services and to recognize those institutions that act
as a "magnet" by creating a work environment that recognizes
and rewards excellence in professional nursing.
Attaining Magnet status means your community hospital has been
nationally recognized for consistently upholding higher standards
of patient care. East Jefferson General Hospital will continue
to work closely with our medical staff, as well as your managed
care providers, to improve the quality of life for our entire
community. It's comforting to know that whenever you need us,
we'll be here.
